What’s more, you might not even need to buy a new phone to reap the benefits.

When we tore down the iPhone 16e, our conclusion was crystal clear: this was not an iPhone upgrade worth getting excited about. Its lackluster specs and lack of MagSafe connectivity made the entire device feel like an unfinished product.

Yes, the phone could still charge wirelessly. But that didn’t mean everything was fine. Without magnets, wireless charging became a bit clumsy—and more than a little annoying. You had to painstakingly fiddle with the positioning. The charger could easily slide off. Accessories that rely on magnetic attachment—from power banks to car mounts—simply wouldn’t work properly. Furthermore, coil misalignment wastes energy, generates excessive heat, and accelerates battery degradation.

The 17e solves this problem. Better yet, it appears Apple has designed the 17e’s back cover to be compatible with the 16e. Once the 17e back cover becomes available, 16e users should be able to add MagSafe functionality to their devices by simply swapping out a single component.

Of course, that’s far from the only thing we discovered inside.

Retains the 16e’s best maintenance features.

First, we see the Lumafield Neptune CT scans—and the results are almost underwhelming. With the iPhone 16e and 17e placed side-by-side, their internal structures appear nearly identical. The most obvious difference lies in the MagSafe components; beyond that, there isn’t much else to distinguish them.

However, we are delighted to see that all the repair-friendly features we loved on the 16e have been retained. The 17e carries over the dual-entry design, allowing users to open the phone from either the front or the back. Replacing the battery doesn’t require removing the screen first, and replacing the screen doesn’t require accessing the device from the back. Since the 17 Pro and Pro Max models have already abandoned this design, we weren’t entirely sure if the 17e would follow suit.

Reassuringly, the back cover still isn’t glued shut. You simply heat the adhesive, pry open a gap, insert a pick, and slice through the softened glue. We’ve long hoped to see adhesive-free opening methods on flagship smartphones (something many smaller manufacturers have already proven is feasible), but Apple doesn’t seem ready to move past the era of heat-and-pry repairs just yet.

That said, we still really appreciate the electrically insulating adhesive located beneath the battery. It’s one of our favorite DIY repair innovations of recent years. First step: apply power.

We prefer using the 12V power supply from our FixHub portable soldering station—connected via a VoltClip—though a standard 9V battery works just as well. After waiting a moment, the battery lifts out with ease. Rated at 15.556 Wh, this battery appears to be identical to the one we found in the 16e model. We don’t just mean “looks the same” or “same dimensions”—we mean literally identical. They are interchangeable. We’ve tested it ourselves.

As we delved deeper into our research, that pair of dual batteries made us realize—for the first time—that parts could be interchangeable.

Almost all parts of the 16e and 17e are interchangeable.

The technical specifications between the 16e and 17e remain largely unchanged. The 17e upgrades from the A18 chip to the A19, resulting in a slight boost in benchmark scores. It features Apple’s latest C1X modem, promising longer battery life and faster data transfer speeds. The base storage capacity has been increased from 128GB to 256GB. The display refresh rate remains at 60Hz. The rear camera remains a 48-megapixel unit, and the front camera remains 12 megapixels. It’s decent. It’s good. It’s exactly what we expected.

Things took an interesting turn, however, when we began swapping parts between the two devices. Internally, almost every component in the 17e appears to be compatible with the 16e. In our testing, we were able to transplant the logic board from the 16e into the 17e, and the Repair Assistant automatically recognized the new hardware.

The MagSafe back cover designed for the 17e can be installed on the 16e.

The experience, however, is not 100% identical: your 16e will not feature the “thump” sound or the MagSafe animation, nor will it automatically enter StandBy mode when charging via MagSafe while the phone is positioned on its side.

Nor will your iPhone 16e suddenly and automatically recognize the iPhone 17e’s Qi2 charging standard—a standard that utilizes a stable 15W output, rather than the variable 5–15W output found in standard Qi and Qi Magnetic charging. Nevertheless, this should still translate to more efficient charging. We require further testing to confirm this definitively; however, our observations suggest that an iPhone 16e equipped with an iPhone 17e back panel can reach power levels of up to 10W, while an iPhone 16e featuring MagSafe magnetic capabilities appears to reach levels closer to the full 15W. All in all, the ability to swap in the iPhone 17e’s MagSafe back panel effectively allows last year’s phone to benefit from this year’s upgrades—and at an extremely low cost.

This is truly cool. The entry-level iPhone lineup has long followed a “parts-sharing” model—utilizing components from older models—presumably to keep manufacturing costs down. For instance, the 2020 iPhone SE shares many parts with the iPhone 8; you can swap out components such as the camera, SIM card tray, and display assembly. However, while the batteries look identical, they are not compatible. Furthermore, there was no “repair assistant” tool available to help you calibrate a new screen, meaning you would lose the True Tone display functionality.

Even within budget-friendly product lines, this nearly universal parts interchangeability remains quite unusual—and the repair assistant tool makes the calibration process incredibly simple.

(Can you tell which image in the carousel above is the 16e and which is the 17e—without cheating by using a mirrored image?)

The sole exception to this nearly perfect interchangeability is the TrueDepth system. If the 16e and 17e can share a significant number of parts, repair shops, refurbishers, and users alike will have more options. Component reuse will become easier, the value of defective units will increase, certain repair costs may decrease, and the distinction between replacement parts and scrapped parts will become increasingly blurred.

If you are a 16e user—and your primary desire is MagSafe—then this will prove to be a highly practical upgrade for you.

MagSafe makes wireless charging less annoying.

People often discuss MagSafe as if it were merely a luxury feature, completely overlooking its true essence.

Wireless charging without magnetic alignment is a hassle. You have to place your phone down first, then nudge it around on the charging pad a few times just to get it to start charging. If you pick up the phone to check a notification, you have to readjust its position. Even a slight bump can interrupt the connection. While it works, the experience feels clunky.

Magnets solve this problem. They snap the charger into place and hold it firmly in position. Our testing indicates that this precise alignment not only boosts charging efficiency but—more importantly—makes the entire setup feel far more reliable. You can easily pick up your phone while it’s charging. You can use a power bank without having to worry about a cable dangling from the bottom. You can snap your phone onto a car mount, confident that it will sit securely and perfectly aligned.

As Charlie noted in an article last month, MagSafe offers functionality that extends far beyond just charging. Once you have a standardized magnetic ring, you gain access to not just a charger, but a complete mounting system. It provides a clean connection point for attaching stands, wallets, grips, battery packs, and all sorts of other quirky accessories that people will undoubtedly devise now that a standard physical interface exists.

This practicality is crucial for the iPhone. While MagSafe’s functionality certainly includes charging, it also ensures that the back of the phone is no longer merely a smooth sheet of glass. The iPhone 16e dropped this feature, whereas the iPhone 17e brings it back.

The USB-C port is still hidden too deeply.

Then, Apple began to lose patience with us. The USB-C port remained frustratingly difficult to access.

This matters because charging ports are prone to wear and tear. This isn’t an uncommon failure. If you’ve used a phone for any significant length of time, you’ve likely already noticed a port starting to show its age: the charging cable only works at a specific angle; the charging connection cuts in and out; or the phone has to be propped at a precise angle on your nightstand just to charge.

Such a component should be easy to replace. Yet, the 17e requires you to practically disassemble the entire phone to do so. The entire logic board must be removed, along with a plastic spacer; several awkwardly positioned screws must be unscrewed; and delicate, adhesive-backed ribbon cables must be carefully peeled away. Situated right next to it is a tiny MEMS microphone—one slip-up, and it’s ruined. Only after completing all these steps can you finally access the long screws that secure the port in place.

What is most frustrating is that Apple has already addressed this issue on the iPhone 16. They relocated the SIM card tray further up, making the port assembly easier to remove. However, this improvement was not applied to the “e” series phones. Consequently, one of the components most prone to failure remains buried beneath other parts that are far less likely to require priority replacement.

This is precisely where the iPhone 17e’s provisional repairability score takes a hit.

You don’t have to buy the 17e to get its best parts.

The repair experience is a mixed bag, though some aspects have improved.
